That he definitely was. But he also held racist views which, by today’s Overton window, would have him canceled or relegated to the far fringe of the political spectrum. Which, in hindsight, may have bolstered his understanding of the threat posed by Hitler, when everybody else was still dithering and hoping for the best. I remember reading a biographic essay of Churchill years ago which proposed that his extreme views were precisely what allowed him to see Hitler’s end game so plainly - in a β€œit takes one to see one” kind of way. Regardless, he was the right man, at the right time, for the right job.

do you think there's a resurgence of imperialism today? how would another Churchill deal with the UN & broad attrition/insurgency?

There’s definitely a resurgence of imperialism (Russia being a prime example). But Churchill wasn’t a part of the post-war 20th century effort to put in place global governance mechanisms like the UN, the Security Council, the G7/G20, etc. So it’s hard to say how he’d react, especially in peace time (he shined as a wartime PM). He was also a nationalist so he might have been on the Brexit side β€” hard to say.
