Väinämöinen is the central character in Finnish national epic Kalevala. Old and wise, possessing magical powers, he thought it was appropriate to marry a girl that could be his granddaughter.

I could imagine what reaction did such a triptych provoke back when it was made.

Similar to Greek mythology, gods are imperfect, just like us 😅

Story of Ilmarinen, a Hephaestus-type god, and Sampo, the magical artifact he created, is for me the most fascinating one in Kalevala. But I as an architect am maybe biased there.

I will share more on his story in the future in this channel.

Although, according to legend, she returned to taunt the grieving Väinämöinen as a perch, and that is hardly a consolation 😅

When I first came to Finland, I found the whole Kalevala to be fascinating but very hard to relate, it took me a while until I learned to appreciate it properly.

That world is foreign to me in more ways than one, with distance in both history and culture.
