I dropped philosophy in first year of uni when I was 18 because I just didn’t grok it. I just didn’t get the key intellectual levers that writers were trying to pull. When I graduated a few years later and read philosophy for my own sake, it dawned on me that I really was just too young for it. I do think you actually need some context, either from life experience or philosophical exposure, to really participate in philosophy.

Absolutely agree. Without context, it’s too abstract. And philosophy is already abstract enough.
