i occasionally wonder if achieving “mass adoption” 

means everyone joins us and our culture 

or if it means that everyone uses our tools to create their own cultures 

increasingly leaning towards the latter

The latter, yes. When the home computer took off, the Homebrew Computer Club didn't scale to millions. But it did mean masses of people  found — and founded — their own niches and tribes on bulletin board systems, Usenet newsgroups, and their successors.
