There has been a relentless opposition research campaign targeting JD Vance lately. This campaign has dug up his old podcast clips and video appearances to paint a picture of him as radical, dishonest, and culturally out of step with most Americans. The clips are not all bad, but they are having an effect in painting him as “weird” — an accusation that he has been unable to rebut with natural charisma. Vance is a smart person undoubtedly, but it seems that he has become victim to his overly cerebral and online manner of expression and poor showmanship compared to Trump. There is also a perception that he is a bit of a phony since he had a well-documented public record as a Never Trump conservaliberal before suddenly rebranding as MAGA. As I mentioned before, Vance is not funny, which is fine, but humor is also an important part of what made MAGA culturally successful. This was embodied by Trump himself, and it is why he is so essential to the movement. Vance has time to pivot but not unlimited time.

Not a good example of someone who really succeeded in the MAGA GOP but Mike Pence is probably less funny and charismatic than Vance. At least a handful of key differences why that didn’t matter as much for him - wasn’t on record as Never Trump until after they broke up, was more of an old school heartland R than a new age populist, etc. Vance is screwed as far as I can tell. Things can change quickly in politics as we’ve seen since Biden dropped out, but JD isn’t going to all of a sudden become charismatic and/or fix his past statements and inconsistencies. His best chance at turning things around is probably the VP debate

Also if Trump and JD win, then the problem is basically fixed. For four years at least. Winning fixes things!
