How’s this not the biggest crypto unlock of the year? @base and Square need to partner up on this. Face ID -> NFC Tap -> Xfer USDC 2.75% saved for small merchants. Goodbye Visa. Goodbye networks. https://9to5mac.com/2024/08/14/apple-nfc-chip-iphone-ios-18-1/

> Goodbye Visa I mean…merchants adopt payment methods that their customers want to transact with, and even saving the interchange (which is below 2.75%), many MANY customers will still prefer using Visa. If the only benefit is saving a few bucks (cents?), it’s not really worth it for customers IMHO. If it’s anonymous I could see it being more useful.

For sure. For now. But when credit cards were first invented, none of the current feature stack existed. We have to imagine brand new stacks that are enabled by transactions happening on chain. Opening up one of the most important tools for connecting digital to physical means builders start playing in that realm

I’m all for new tools! I might be a bit more cynical in that I suspect Apple isn’t freeing us from networks but trying to become the next network.

Apple will own our physical interface with digital abstractions for probably 50-infinity years. But I’d rather it be them than Google.
