I just had a portfolio company founder do a reference check on an advisory firm, that they might have hired—-because the firm’s flagship experience was working for me. Turns out, it was a total lie / scam. Do reference checks before hiring anybody important!

Wow, a good reminder to do your due diligence. It's always wild to me the number of companies that don't do any background checking. In my experience it is the companies/people that need to be background checked the most, who are often the best at convincing teams they don't need to be checked. Grifters gonna grift.
