Turns out, it was a total lie / scam.

Wow, a good reminder to do your due diligence.

It's always wild to me the number of companies that don't do any background checking.

In my experience it is the companies/people that need to be background checked the most, who are often the best at convincing teams they don't need to be checked. Grifters gonna grift.

Trust exists in the heads of the people you work/interacted with. To measure trust you must go talk to those people!
