What’s todays equivalent of being a kid and getting to play with computers in the 80, 90s?

The interesting thing about this comparison is that in the 90s when I was playing with computers, I didn’t have to create an account or ask permission. In most cases, today’s “playing with computers” happens in the cloud and requires an account.

Not sure necessarily true. Your parents had to have an account to buy it. Bank, etc. and the onboarding of those accounts are equivalent to our modern day onboarding.

My sister and I bought our first computer out of someone’s garage for cash that we’d made doing chores all summer. I was able to tinker on that thing without an account. But I get your point.
