Since I started in crypto 3 years ago, I’ve run dozens of user interviews, trying to crack the crypto adoption funnel. How does someone go from normie → newbie → savvy? Where do they start? One theme has stood out: Everyone has a friend who helps. Someone who walks them through setting up a wallet, depositing funds, and making them feel safe: a trusted guide. For me, that person was my now-husband, who onboarded me to Fortmatic (now magic labs). And when I talk to users today, the story hasn’t changed. ~40% of survey respondents cited trust as the biggest barrier to entry in crypto. And honestly, that’s not surprising given all the rugs, scams, and hacks. Trust is everything. Crypto products should feel like a friend guiding you through the process. How did you get into crypto? Who, or what, helped you take the first step?

i wish web3 was known for its peer to peer culture more than the casino one. as a brand builder, i also love to learn about peoples crypto origin stories and the amount of times a friend or community was the reason someone stayed is incredibly common.

Ledger isn’t the right starting place for most, but the onboarding does this, which is nice

I had some pals introduce me to it, but I just watched loads of YouTube videos to understand the basics about ETH and what it was/wallets (metamask mostly) Cannot imagine joining during this cycle though

Well depends on what you mean by "crypto adoption". Do you mean consumer crypto? Or do you mean degenning? Degenning will always be a niche thing, and I doubt majority of the population will do anything degen specific when it comes to crypto, except very basic things. They hardly even do it when it comes to TradFi. I think consumer crypto on the other hand, utilizing crypto rails is a better use case.

I'm that friend that tries to onboard everyone.. As for me, I walked the longest path.. figured out everything by myself by trail and error Much more error by the way 😅

Completely agree. In the future I hope the onboarding process feels more like a friend guiding you instead of you trying to blindly navigate some kind of minefield.

This is so true - I mined dogecoin and bought on Coinbase for years, but my true onboarding event was when a degen friend lobbied hard to get me to not miss out on DeFi summer and open up Metamask again Wish I had listened to him earlier, but that activation energy from yield farming (free money) and the Uni airdrop put me on a path that I’m still on
