Is naming disasters after the dates they occurred a recent phenomenon? We don’t call Pearl Harbor “Dec 7”, but we do use date names for 9/11, Oct 7, and Jan 6.

i think it’s memetic. whichever name is more memorable, easier to say, etc just sticks.
