Life is statistically more likely to happen than not because the universe favors arrangements of atoms that process energy more efficiently.

this explains the future as a phase of the known universe but I dont think it fits time before now (past). The entire universe has been building and combing atoms to make it possible to break them down. One could argue that the big bang's initialization resulted from the mass accumulation of atoms.
