In Marina Abramović’s memoir she says: “I read a statement of Bruce Nauman's: “Art is a matter of life and death.” It sounds melodramatic, but it's so true. This was exactly how it was for me” Why do you think she thinks art is a matter of life or death? Do you think that is the case?

She's a performance artist, which means that she can't stage or rehearse anything; all objects, emotions and actions are real. Using herself as on object &/or subject, she puts herself in danger every time, but there's simply no other way. It's her charm and the greater mission.

I got to see MA stage Bach's Goldberg Variations at Park Ave Armory (one of my favorite spaces in NYC). The piano made a revolution around the audience while we laid in beach chairs in pitch black. A living clock. https://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/06/arts/music/marina-abramovic-and-igor-levit-variation-on-goldberg.html

So, very interesting: It was not by any means the best performance of this piece I've heard, and also the space and setting diminished the music's acoustic impact. On the other hand, the experience made such an impression in my memory that I can still relive it even now. Much more than other performances. Great art?

you tell me as they say :) but such a strong imprint could be a positive signal for a great artistic (opposite to musical) performance.

Yeah it's a real question for me actually – whether the aesthetic excellence or the aesthetic impact is more core to "art". It obviously depends on how you define the word. On this note, there is a chapter in Arendt Human Condition that has stuck with me very much lately. ... /art X /book-clubs collab stream?
