the US politicians' posture towards Russia-Ukraine war has nothing to do with Ukraine. 

one side thinks prolonging the war will weaken Russia
the other side thinks prolonging the war will bring Russia closer to China

the other side is effectively Russia at this point

Russia and China will never be true allies like the US and its partners. There is too much competition between both, and autocratic powers will end up at odds. I think their partnership could be dangerous, more like the US and USSR during ww2. A force to be reckoned with,  but an alliance of convenience that will come to an end.
