Skiff raised ~$14m in VC to build an open source alternative Google Suite. Now it's being acquired by Notion and the code has been taken down. All software is ephemeral. File over app.

Code doesn’t seem to be down? https://github.com/skiff-org I don’t think they ever open sourced their backend. They didn’t use an OSS license AFAICT: CC-NonCommercial-ShareAlike https://github.com/skiff-org/skiff-apps/blob/main/LICENSE Which is similar to your Obsidian license (yours is better/well written)

Damage control. They seem to have made it public again. But the app is still being sunset and the point still stands... VC creates unavoidable pressure to go big or go broke.

see their tweet 🙄 "The repository was temporarily made private to remove issues, discussions, and other features which were used for harassment." https://x.com/skiffprivacy/status/1756456721139322964

Yep. I never used their stuff other than to test it. I had hoped they would want to interop, but they were always a closed platform. Interop with encryption is hard, but that’s why we’ve been working on it as protocols. VC is a different part of this story ;)
