Something similar happened with snack food. By discovering the "bliss point" - the right combination of sugar, salt, and fat - producers knowingly encouraged over-consumption and "addiction-like behaviors." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bliss_point_(food)

Addiction like behavior is right! The big tobacco companies bought the food companies in the 1980s and the scientists got to work at engineering food to be more addictive. Essentially 5 companies own a majority of the food system

Amazing the amount of money that has gone into it. Pretty sure kettle corn was a result of the research. ๐ Also remember hearing a story about scientists who gave sweetened peanut butter to mice. The mice literally couldn't stop eating.
