I think the advice “remain calm” is usually interpreted with a moral valence, i.e. large displays of emotion are not proper. It’s good advice outside of morality, because remaining calm on some level allows you to better understand the appropriate and decisive response, but *importantly* the response itself doesn’t necessarily need to appear calm.

I think the latter point is where philosophies that value non-reactivity often get misinterpreted today.
