I was told it’s for 
- recognising the gender of the baby
- because it hurts and if you get them as a baby you wouldn’t remember the pain

both seem to be weird reasons

I got my ears pierced at 20 because my parents would have never let me haha 

I always found it weird to see babies with golden earrings ^^

(and you probably shouldn't: they can't consent)
