It really is nice to post without worrying about being punished for using the wrong words. Ironic given the rhetoric from Elon Musk.

"With three neighbouring armies already on the ground, a conflict that has simmered in Democratic Republic of Congo’s eastern borderlands for years is evolving into a wider regional war. M23 rebels, in the latest of a string of uprisings backed by Rwanda, seized the city of Goma in January and went on to make gains across North Kivu and South Kivu provinces." https://www.reuters.com/graphics/CONGO-SECURITY/MAPS/movaykzaava/

Not the point of your post, but clicking through got me to click around on Amwaj a bit. Hadn’t heard of it before. I like that they have in depth coverage of environmental stuff https://amwaj.media/article/deep-dive-will-europe-s-green-agenda-push-away-qatari-gas

I doubt it. FT is faithfully high quality and it’s owned now by the Japanese Nikkei — also known for quality.

Biden’s climate law provided states billions to give taxpayers rebates for energy efficient appliances and home renovations. All but one — South Dakota — state opted in. Trump froze the spending. Now, right as checks were going out, the programs are getting canceled. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/03/05/california-pauses-home-energy-rebate-program-amid-trump-funding-freeze.html?__source=iosappshare%7Ccom.apple.UIKit.activity.CopyToPasteboard

Uh oh, another scary consequence of the new tariff spat: NERC, North America’s grid reliability watchdog, says that restricting the flow of electricity between the U.S. and Canada risks blackouts. on.ft.com/4kwcWv9

There’s a lot more political and general content, a lot less crypto and technical stuff than here. A lot of journalists migrated there from X. The app is slower and clunkier and more basic.

I use Bluesky in addition to X. It’s interesting, if a little clunky feeling at times. Definitely a bit of a political echo chamber, but, increasingly, so is X

You ever go to Lakruwana in Staten Island? It’s a favorite of mine. All you can eat Sri Lankan buffet for a flat $21 in cash every weekend. The deviled chicken is one of the best staples but not the only one. The pineapple curry also rocks. Maybe you, @dmarans and I hit it up one weekend before April.

The big problem, as I understand it from my reporting, isn’t finding domestic rare earth deposits but getting processing capacity up and running. In theory, however, reserves that can be mined beget refineries. So we’ll see. The other issue is money and permitting. The Biden admin was eager to support the former, even if Democrats couldn’t get their act together on permitting reform. This could be an area where Trump and the Republicans make real progress.

Ugh. That makes sense. It’s like how Substack links get shadow banned. So much for free speech.

I think it’s political kayfabe. It gives the Trump administration something to point to to tell Americans they got something back in return for all the money we’ve spent on the war, even if the reality the minerals aren’t actually accessible or economical to mine.

China dominates the supply of rare earths processing. But this chart from the FT illustrates how much China also dominates the actual supply of raw ore, too.
