Just finished Empires of the Steppes. Sprawling messy book but does the job. Has anyone traveled the Eurasian steppes? From say the Tarim Basin to the Black Sea (modulo current war)? Seems like it would make for a spectacular train journey. Pity Central Asia is now a bunch of weird dictatorships. I have a new appreciation for the region now.
