good design is one of the highest leverage things for a company, and yet i still go to openai to create mediocre graphics and brand assets i think the challenge is that it's very difficult to articulate visual identity at the early stages, and design requires as much iteration and discovery as product thoughts?

one of our first steps for developing a brand in a box is moodboarding. instead of jumping straight to articulating a visual identity, it’s about grabbing inspo for look/feel/vibe before jumping into taking an initial shot at developing branding concepts. then we’re able to share a few different boards for a client to call out what they don’t like, what they like, and what may inspire them more. can be done async via figma comments or in-person. but it’s really about capturing those initial strong gut feelings.

i think that's where i'm struggling i haven't had a strong gut feeling about a particular design concept in a while maybe a symptom of the times and ai oversaturation or maybe it just takes time

then i think you can also just look for inspo from different brands that you like, collect looks/vibes/designs that resonate with you, or just jots words down on what you want the brand to feel like. bad ex: want something to feel exclusive like the amex black card or rolex

lately, i've been inspired by the olympics i like how it's an ancient brand that's rooted in history and tradition, yet every 2/4 years it's reimagined by a new creator in a modern context plus i like the association w atlas and the rings idk why i only thought about it recently, but it's interesting and i want to figure out if there's a cool way to express it

what parts of the olympics brand do you like? there’s also always the question of brands/looks/feels that you don’t like or don’t vibe with you

i like that it's kind of a headless brand every country takes the rings or some greek art and kind of does something new w them i also think there's a lot there about the iconography of competition and identity

ever tried dropping this into ai to see how it develops some mood boards or finds similar brands? maybe it could also find you a history of olympics branding to look through to see what you do/don’t like
