I get asked a lot of what living in Hawaii is like. As a whole its a magical and unique place. Grateful to have lived and grown up here, but it has challenges, a lot of them. Especially for the Hawaiian people (residents don't ever call themselves Hawaiian btw, even if you've been here for generations, only descendents are Hawaiian). John Oliver really nails a lot of the most pressing current and historic issues in the most entertaining and hilarious way. So good. πŸ€™ 😁

I grew up in Hawai'i too. I've lived on the mainland for a long time now, which has given me more perspective about how unique the islands really are. Bookmarked to watch this soon.

(Mirror World Island Role Call) πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈ I’m on the antipodean counterpoint island 🏝️ to you guys…over the other end of the big blue pacific triangle. (Waiheke Island. South Pacific) Islands have wonderful effects on subjective quality, eh? Community spirit/feel amplified by non-ambiguous boundary lines (the warers edge), not some vague conceptual line drawn from the minds of cartographers.

Exactly! That physical boundary, even if its a relatively short distance from the next or main body of another landmass creates a greater sense of people and place that palpable in air they share, the land at their feet. It permeates into every structure, custom, and person that inhabits it. The greater the isolation, the stronger the amplification of it and bonds it creates. There's just something about Islanders. I've found it true no matter what part of the world they are from.

I reckon you're right @justbuild, a certain kind of psychology is attracted to these small patches of rock jutting out from the ocean. Small enough to wrap one's subject experience around! It's hard to believe there is more than a few thousand people in the world...but I've heard it's true!

Ha ha ha. I love that. It really does feel like we are on our own little planets, because everyone else feels worlds away. πŸ‘Š 😁
