Reading this, I’m reminded of the fact that writing about history, constrained through some theme, is powerful because it allows you to visit and reimagine the same time periods over and over again from different perspectives based on what your thematic constraint is. It’s a book that I think touches on a topic that has been repeatedly investigated and deservedly so, and it’s a seminal book on the topic, imo

I wonder what the author meant by this title. Does he contend that industrial development in Western Europe has allowed us to raise the living standard of all westerners ? I find it ironic that today, it is our way of life as a civilization (industrialization, consumerism) that is pushing us towards doom. We are burning from the fire unleashed ;)
