Plastic is fantastic. Although second order effects are terrifying. This stuff is everywhere and most probably negatively affects earthlings’ health

The microplastics swimming through my veins disagree, but I’m reminded of this George Carlin take https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rld0KDcan_w&pp=ygUVZ2VvcmdlIGNhcmxpbiBwbGFzdGlj

As often, the tech itself is agnostic, and it’s the human handling of it that makes it a benefit or a hazard. Right now the jury is still out on the effects of microplastic and nanoplastic (MNP) on the brain and heart — but if the link to dementia and cardiovascular events is confirmed, then at the rate of increasing environmental concentration of MNP, we might well be facing a pretty major health crisis in the coming decades. Unlike the mad cow situation, this one won’t be easy to reverse and could take centuries https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-024-03453-1

It makes modern medicine possible, but it's a Faustian bargain if we can't truly recycle it effectively

Plastic is a miracle turned monster. It solved a lot, then overstayed its welcome

As with most things, the issue lies not in the product, but in how we utilize it.
