one of the great achievements of humanity is its ability to evolve societies complex enough to not need dictatorships, but simple people unable to bear the burdens of complexity will always prefer dictators.

The Roman Republic had tremendous aversion to the idea of monarchy (they called it dictatorship) and often reverted as much as possible to republicanism. Dictatorship was often declared during times of war when time was of the essence
