The Roman Republic had tremendous aversion to the idea of monarchy (they called it dictatorship) and often reverted as much as possible to republicanism. Dictatorship was often declared during times of war when time was of the essence

Republicanism though was much less like what the US is familiar with and also very unlike Republican under French Revolution times, it was a senate system + consuls, assemblies and magistrates and various checks and balances to keep patrician families in check from accumulating too much power

one of the great achievements of humanity is its ability to evolve societies complex enough to not need dictatorships, but simple people unable to bear the burdens of complexity will always prefer dictators.
