Though I may be in the “Builder-Pragmatist” quadrant, I got into crypto because I cherish liberty and see decentralized architectures as a key way to preserve it That’s why seeing an anti-crypto, anti-blockchain platform win at decentralization messaging is bizarre. Feels like crypto lost the plot https://worldwithoutcaesars.com/

yeah the bluesky case study is interesting because their users aren’t flocking there because it’s decentralized lol, they’re probably completely unaware if anything. they’re joining because they think it’s a safe space from right-wing views and somehow vaguely anti-zuck/elon.

I think that’s right for bsky the app. It’s ideologically a home for left of center beliefs, and has grown mostly as a response to X’s ownership change and the current political climate That said, atproto is gaining mindshare among devs that care about decentralization — this seems like a separate (but related) trend

yeah agreed, curious to see how dev tooling and building blocks evolve with atproto since atm it’s sorta sub-par higher level kinda disappoints me that FC and other blockchain-based apps haven’t been able to effectively communicate decentralization as a core value prop to users

I have zero experience with atproto, could all just be decentralization posturing and no good apps outside of bsky -- what's your experience been so far? And 100% on the latter. Instead it's going the opposite direction with "hey wanna buy the top on $$public"

also very little experience, haven’t built anything yet. I think there’s *maybe* one other popular client now which is an IG competitor (Flashes). mostly been observing from afar and learning the tradeoffs vs. systems like FC. would like to write a piece about BS user acquisition and how the decentralized value prop of apps like BS/FC is being lost in the political shitstorm.

All decentralisation messaging is based around protecting the user from a threat vector ‘big bad bank or entity taking your stuff’ We have never managed to effectively message what the user gets and what they can do with a decentralised life. ‘You own your data and money!’ ‘Ok what does that get me’ ‘Not sure! We haven’t built that bit yet’

less about data at present and more about sovereign ownership i.e. not being subject to arbitrary account deletions or other abuses of power imo this is enough to start with what has already been built (e.g. protocols like FC), but yes agreed that there is still much more to flesh out for this vision to feel fully formed from an end-user pov
