- they almost all use the same protocol “CAN” bus
- can just plug in a compatible device, intercept and start sending messages and the car just does it.

I was very surprised they’re not authenticating messages.

As I know volkwagen has a registry in the main control unit that labels rogue units as foreign and does not allow the car to start the “ignition”.
But otherwise can is just a simple broadcast protocol. Anything hooked to the obd or any other connector can snif the data of all devices.
Should add that many modern cars adopt a parallel optics cable for high speed multimedia data but is often used for other high transmision sensors too

Talking over CAN bus is pretty common for robotics too! Esp cars though. Also generally a fan of open pilot and what came out of it (tinygrad) which was spun out into its own thing
