There’s a fundamental tension between hardcore speculators and players who care purely about gameplay. Appeasing one side risks alienating the other, raising the question: does making these games crypto-based even make sense? You could still build a revenue model without crypto, allowing players to trade an in-game currency. The only aspect that truly benefits from crypto is an open smart contract, though that comes with its own dramas. The crypto label itself is a barrier, I wouldn't have joined if a friend hadn’t gifted me my $FIRE and a Farcaster account. The middle ground between speculators and pure gamers might not be appealing enough to sustain either. I saw how the community's engagement was tied to token price and rewards. I joined during an upswing, unaware that much of the activity was fueled by speculation. When prices dropped, engagement fell, and the vibe soured, new players likely found complaints about rewards just discouraging. Balancing both sides is an incredibly difficult challenge.

You are right that this game could be created on web2 rails but then we would more or less be building something that has been done before. It's a difficult challenge for sure but trying to build something innovative in the crypto and gaming space to give players a new experience. I think this is worth fighting for. It's also different in that people have a chance to have skin in the game and be a part of something that hopefully becomes valuable.

it's definitely worth fighting for! there's so many opportunities for an onchain game that you can't do in web2, being able to use other onchain primitives behind the scenes to do really cool things like DeFi or DAO integrations no one should underestimate the power of composability
