For me, my main product is just my writing - so unless the audience is going to convert into paying readers, I’m better off being paid for the talk

Interesting perspective. I’ve never been paid either in dozens of panels and speaking engagements I’ve done. But I also wouldn’t expect to. I seek out those engagements because they give me a platform to build brand equity and personal credibility, network with the audience, and get consulting contracts that way.

the 'we'll pay one or two celebs but everyone else gets exposure' conference model is so ridiculous

Been there! I realized I was making so many companies money off of my work and they’d repay me by sticking me in crappy overnight hotels - at best.

Web3 gigs or legacy ones?

I’ve successfully negotiated with the legacy ones who, well, have standards. Trying that in web3… Ghost town.
