“I get you have to make money, but why did you make my favorite part of your game paid?” This is comment we get as we introduce monetization in Derby. Ultimately we learned that players are willing to badger and beg us in comments before begging parents to pay. One weird aspect of parasocial relationships.

Noticing a lot of VR streamers on TikTok will categorize their streams as “Gorilla Tag” no matter what game they’re playing. There aren’t a lot of VR titles on the list so I’d bet it boosts views while acting as a catch-all because there aren’t a lot of VR titles to choose from.

Gave a talk at a middle school today about creating VR video games. The kids wanted to play their own game they called “guess the server bill” with us. Iconic

if a product lacks soul, people can feel that. this is such a cliché, but it gets more and more obvious every year as people in the industry lose sight of what it means.

Kids are using VR to grow their huge followings. Here’s an example: https://youtube.com/@jmancurly

There are positives, but there are definitely some issues with where this leads

George Lucas made American Graffiti and highlighted teens cruising in cars down main street as the cornerstone of socializing in the 60s. VR is the modern car for teens and the internet is now main street. The modern “nice car” is a big following on YouTube, IG or TikTok.

VR is the perfect feedback machine. Go into your game and start talking to users! I’ll never stop doing this.

Agreed. It’s definitely a concern how very basic parts of computing are being replaced by shortcut interfaces that will slow the generation down in the long-term.

Things I’ve learned about the VR generation as we build Throwback Studios: 1) make it free 2) they don’t know how to use keyboards because of iPads (unless they’re PC gamers) 3) they don’t really know how to use URLs, they search instead 4) VR is a tool to become famous
