my hope is that they drive utility back to this "memecoin," or allow it to accrue value in some meaningful way, but the current framing doesn't leave me very hopeful

Every protocol will have hundreds of coins,,, for campaigns, entertainment, governance, etc. New model based on community economic growth — as long as the economy on your protocol grows / evolves,,, it will continue to support more coin launches.
