Nuance is the first thing to go when the masses stir up I think of The Cultural Revolution decade in China (1966-76) and how the Cultural Revolution shaped modern day China, I think of Jean-Paul Marat (1743-1793) and his role in French Revolution / Montagnard faction and death (H/t @gilles recent cast about Kintsugi)

But there was nuance during that time. Ex: 100 Flowers campaign where intellectuals were asked for feedback and criticisms. It was eventually reversed, some were punished, some were punished/rehabilitated, some were exalted. It was a tumultuous and complex period, the definition of nuance.

Yeah I don’t think it’s as black and white as all nuance is gone - tumultuous times is the has tons of nuance - ofc multiple books can be written on French Revolution/ cultural revolution Example of destruction of nuance that comes to mind: The campaign to destroy the Four Olds (破四旧立四新)
