Nuance is the first thing to go when the masses stir up I think of The Cultural Revolution decade in China (1966-76) and how the Cultural Revolution shaped modern day China, I think of Jean-Paul Marat (1743-1793) and his role in French Revolution / Montagnard faction and death (H/t @gilles recent cast about Kintsugi)

But there was nuance during that time. Ex: 100 Flowers campaign where intellectuals were asked for feedback and criticisms. It was eventually reversed, some were punished, some were punished/rehabilitated, some were exalted. It was a tumultuous and complex period, the definition of nuance.
