Nuance is the first thing to go when the masses stir up I think of The Cultural Revolution decade in China (1966-76) and how the Cultural Revolution shaped modern day China, I think of Jean-Paul Marat (1743-1793) and his role in French Revolution / Montagnard faction and death (H/t @gilles recent cast about Kintsugi)

What a great post it was. Caused so much reflection. Where do you think the tipping point lies for nuance?

Babeuf is so much more interesting though. He wasn't a member of the establishment, but rather a true believer who gained social power through writing alone was executed with members of the convention anyway by what was by then a cynical, centrist Directory. It's safe to say Marat would have been executed with him.
