Base

Regarding Base transaction fees: they are high because the chain is at its target capacity (2x the throughput of the L1), but demand has increased dramatically. Data fees remain insignificant thanks to EIP-4844 blobs which are still far from capacity!  So while "it could be worse..." what can make it better? (cont)

this is a good thread from @bayardo on the current state of @base fees and path forward. he's nuanced and measured, as i'd expect our core protocol leader to be. 

i want to share a less nuanced perspective:

1. we need to scale the @base EVM >1000x
2. we need to do this with urgency
3. the time to start is right now

I'm sharing this publicly because I think it's important that we have a dialogue about this as an ecosystem — and it's important for us to share our internal dialogue, so all of you can participate.

my ask for all of you: share your thoughts in this thread or elsewhere. we need to hear from you!

with this framing, I'm challenging our team to:

- test our gas limit and understand what we can do to raise it
- think from first principles on L2 node hardware needs and constraints
- accelerate alternate client implementations and parallization work
- challenge ourselves to think outside the box to get more scale

in parallel to this work that will scale the @base EVM, we're also continuing full steam on:

- supporting the superchain vision and scaling work through parallel L2s
- unlocking additional through dedicated L3 blockspace

to bring billions of people onchain, we're going to need it all

will scaling @base be hard? absolutely.

do I know all of the answers to how we will do it? absolutely not.

but I know that we have an incredible team and that we will be able to accomplish whatever we set our mind to.

to share a bit more about where i'm coming from, I believe: 

- ethereum pursued the rollup centric roadmap to scale
- L2s are explicitly designed to bootstrap off the decentralization of L1
- this decision should *open up the design space* for L2
- but, i think we are currently *too anchored* to L1 scaling constraints
