What’s your favorite translation of the Tao te Ching? I’ve always been partial to the Jane English version, less sterile intellectual language and strong poetic vibes.

I like a lot of David Hinton's translations, including that one.

Jane English for sure. I also enjoy Lin Yutang's.

I second David Hinton — not sure I could choose a favorite, but his is up there. Fluid and expressive. He is careful to translate the same concepts as the same English words, eg, ziran/tzu-jan is always "things occurring of themselves". Tho I do wish he used the pinyin and not Wade-Giles 🥲
