Last month, I parted ways with a long-time co-founder and friend.

Yes, if you don't catch up. I think a healthy relationship is a mix of pushing eachother at different times and in different areas. 

It's like that running drill where runner A passes runner B and then runner B must pass runner a and it repeats.

in this ideal scenario, isn't the other person effectively pulling at that point?

This part is so important. I learned this years ago from doing music in a group. 2 of us in the group were always the doers while the rest seemed content to ride along. You cannot drag people with you to success, you have to all be pushing to even get close. We always called it self determined level of involvement, you either want it or you don’t but we’re not waiting for you.
