I’ll have to watch for this. If I’m looking for product recommendations on Reddit it’s frequently esoteric stuff in trade subreddits. For that stuff I still find it useful.

Example: if you’re doing home irrigation work the guys in r/irrigation give rock solid advice on which parts they replace constantly vs. which ones will work for years without a problem.

yes this makes perfect sense to me, certain subreddits can be good for that kind of pointed advice the phenomenon I’m describing is more relevant when looking to buy products of some kind, like a kitchen pot or a coffee machine, not so much utilitarian/practical stuff. in pretty much all contexts though, the folks on there are borderline obsessed with every cent of what something costs so it does warp many (but not all) of their reccos.
