Last week I followed a bin of our lemons as it traveled from the orchard to our packing  house.  This was my first time seeing our actual fruit getting cleaned & graded.

Our fruit is picked by hand and loaded into these large bins that hold about 1000 pounds of lemons.  A special forklift that straddles the bins maneuvers through and picks out the full bins to be loaded for trucking.

Once the truck arrives at the packing house the bins are unloaded and placed onto rollers that help remove leaves and other debris.  Then the fruit is washed and dried and taken to sorting.

Each piece of fruit is photographed and analyzed for color, size, quality, imperfections.  Once photographed the fruit is automatically pushed onto the appropriate belt for boxing, bagging or storing.

It’s a co-op many local farmers participate in.  So we combine our resources and sell together to the larger buyers
