An interesting trend since Trump's election is authoritarians around the world got emboldened. Another result of a shift in overton window. Imamoglu in Turkish secular opposition beat Erdogan's party three times (one got repeated after he won) in Istanbul where 20% of Turkish population lives. He had recently announced candidacy for presidency. He now joined Kurdish opposition leader Demirtas, as another high-profile politician in jail. https://www.politico.eu/article/tayyip-erdogan-main-rival-arrested-major-clampdown-turkish-opposition-ekrem-imamoglu/

Good point - maybe? I think in the long term I wouldn't be surprised if it also falls into isolationism and "desperate authoritarianism" due to the constant threats.

It's quite a different situation. Turkey is already soft authoritarian and of non-obvious geopolitical alignment, so Erdoğan can go hard in the current chaos knowing that he's unlikely to face much international pressure.
