I have a funny story that is essentially real-life version of meme. My barber is Kyrgyz. When I came home from a reporting trip in Mongolia in 2023, he was really excited that I had been in the region. I had learned from Mongolian words while I was there, so I asked if I could compare with him to see if there were any cognates with Kyrgyz. He acted all offended. "Bro I'm Kyrgyz. We're not the same. Not even close." I apologized and explained that I was just curious if there was any overlap. We continued on as usual. At some point later in the haircut, we started talking about his son, who was about to immigrate here with his wife from where they had been living in Russia. He showed me pictures of the adorable three-year-old boy. "What's his name?" I asked. "Chinggis."

This happened to me with Providence & Pawtucket, RI. They’re 5 miles apart. People are funny!
