Not only are entitled boomers making affordability worse with their NIMBY positions and lobbying against increasing housing supply, but now they're wanting to reap all the rewards from the scarcity while feeling no downsides in taxes. Actual vampire mindset.

The older I get the more my mindset on these changes. While what you describe is true, rising property taxes on seniors living on fixed incomes is harsh. Some of these people worked 40+ years, paid a mortgage for 30 years and finally feel like they own an asset that they can retire in. States like Maryland re-assess home values every 4 years and tax based on fair market value. This is crushing. There are other ways: chief among them taxing investment properties or second and third homes more aggressively.

To clarify: I’m not advocating for eliminating these taxes on retirees but I do think rate increases should be capped as is done in California. We owe retirees a small degree of predictability in retirement.

I think facilitating the entrenchment of those home owners, maybe with the exception of those 75+ is probably a net negative for society. If their house has become so valuable they can't afford taxes on it, it's probably best for everyone that they find a way to take equity out or sell it and move into something they can afford. Broadly speaking I wouldn't be opposed to some program that either credited or reduced the tax liability on seniors who's yearly income was below a certain threshold, but a blanket stop at 65 just wayyy disproportionately benefits already wealthy retirees to a ridiculous level.

This is a great example of how oligarchs have flipped the script and have turned this into a class war. Do we really want to kick seniors out of their homes for the last 10 years of their life? The vast majority of them are not the problem. Let them rest. They’ve paid their dues. Our supply problem is artificial. Kicking them out of their homes will just invite private equity in to buy them up and turn yet another owned home into a rental.
