Had a very sobering conversation with my kids tonight about the state of U.S. politics. It’s unsettling to think this is the world they’ve grown up in - where division, anger, and uncertainty seem to dominate the headlines. I tried to stress importance of staying informed, being kind, and working toward positive change, no matter how challenging it feels. But man, does it feel challenging! Has anyone else had similar conversations with their pre-teen/ teenagers? Any tips or talking points?

My 14 yo eloquently summed up exactly what happened with the TikTik ban recently. It’s disheartening but in a way their eyes seem more open to the realities that were always there. Growing up in a progressive house & in a progressive state I believed the world was improving & on track to keep doing that. It’s ok if my kids have a more realistic understanding of the world.

The divisiveness is a tough one. Something that’s really preoccupied me is how to help my kids from falling into one of the feeder communities that lead to the Tate-verse and whole male toxicity world. There are “edgey” YouTubers and meme factories that spit out light versions of this content and slowly normalize hate. I’ve seen enough loved ones radicalized online to know almost anyone is susceptible. Our answer thus far has been to really keep engaging with our kids and making sure they engage with the broader world. A lot of the divisiveness thrives in the shadows of the Internet but is less likely to be said out loud and in public.
