Had a very sobering conversation with my kids tonight about the state of U.S. politics. It’s unsettling to think this is the world they’ve grown up in - where division, anger, and uncertainty seem to dominate the headlines. I tried to stress importance of staying informed, being kind, and working toward positive change, no matter how challenging it feels. But man, does it feel challenging! Has anyone else had similar conversations with their pre-teen/ teenagers? Any tips or talking points?

Not yet. Oldest is 4. Generally remind him that the police/nypd cannot be trusted and to seek ambulance or firefighters in an emergency.

I don't know if teenagers will be into it, but I do recommend the Volts podcast by David Roberts. Each episode is an interview with a person or org that is working towards climate change solutions - and it's a great reminder that despite politics, people are in the ground doing the work...

Had the same convo with my 6 year old. He's a kind person (for a 6 yo lmao) so we don't want him to lose that going forward if he starts paying more attention to the news. My guess is keeping him on that track will get harder pre-teen/teen years...

I know that by making space to have these discussions and to listen to your kids concerns you're parenting beyond 80% of us. As someone who grew up without it, I aspire to create that space for my kids whenever anxiety/uncertainty seems to be growing.

Sounds like a heavy conversation, but necessary. It’s a tough world to navigate, especially for them. I think you’re doing great by focusing on staying informed, being kind, and making a difference—small steps can spark bigger changes.

My 14 yo eloquently summed up exactly what happened with the TikTik ban recently. It’s disheartening but in a way their eyes seem more open to the realities that were always there. Growing up in a progressive house & in a progressive state I believed the world was improving & on track to keep doing that. It’s ok if my kids have a more realistic understanding of the world.

GM FAM! These kinda conversation with kids are vital in today's world where scripted things are happening in politics, sports and even in hospitals. Appreciate it!
