Question for ethereum experts: Is mainnet a safer store of value than L2s? Or is safety on both primarily a factor of my ability to safeguard my seed phrase? In other words, if I transact primarily on L2s, is there a reason why I might still prefer to store most of my eth on mainnet?

Yes, L1 is still most secure. All L2s have additional attack surface area, and none of them are fully permissionless ("stage 2") at this point either. https://medium.com/l2beat/introducing-stages-a-framework-to-evaluate-rollups-maturity-d290bb22befe

Can you say more (in laymenโ€™s) about additional attack surface area? Are there more precautions users need to take when interacting on L2s?

The l2 itself could be bugged or hacked. And the funds drained from bridge contract on the l1.
