One thing I've struggled with in my career is separating my interests from the actual work.

I quit my first job thinking I had something lined up at a company that I was obsessed with. I successfully chatted my way to a final round interview for a role that didn't exist because I was passionate about the product and the design space. But I didn't get the role because I couldn't explain how I would actually contribute to the business.

At times over the years, I've been a moth to a flame, leading myself to situations that are fascinating from a distance but ultimately a dangerous mirage masking the day to day experience of a job.

I used to be a romantic about work. Now I'm not even sure that passion is necessary (let alone sufficient) for a good job.

Tbh I’ve encountered this a lot too. Really helped when I took one last step to map the tangible role I’d be doing and asking why the company would need me to do it over someone else
