It’s a good post. I think we can add something to it by thinking at the tribal level, not just the individual level. 1) First, rightism is straightforward tribalism. They are for their tribe. So they are against everyone outside their tribe. 2) Leftism is backdoor tribalism. They are against bigotry. Also, everyone outside their tribe is a bigot! So they are against everyone outside their tribe. 3) This is how the rightist gets to National Socialism while the leftist gets to Socialism in One Country. The rightist invokes master morality to dominate. The leftist invokes slave morality to *dominate the dominators* — like the dictatorship of the proletariat. And then they also ruthlessly dominate. 4) The alternative to both rightism and leftism is actually internationalist capitalism, which has win/win baked into it. 5) So, merchant morality or founder morality is the positive-sum alternative to both master and slave morality. Yes, you do seek to win. But you only win if the other guy also wins.

hope you're not implying gray tribe doesn't have its own kind of tribalism

I think the approach is to understand people always tend to that (instead of acting like you can get rid of it) and to try to incentivize people away from it. So red would be basic tribalism, blue would be to act like their solution doesn’t also result in tribalism, and gray would be realize it will always exist and set up incentives to mitigate it.

gray is also very much 'act like their solution doesn't result in tribalism', i would argue even moreso than blue tribe

ymmv of course, and the whole “gray” thing is very early days so it’s tough to say how it works in practice. In my experience I only very rarely and only privately hear “blue” admit that tribalism is inevitable. People who would be considered “gray” would/do publicly admit this. Tribalism could also be good in some cases to prevent signal/noise dilution. The good thing about the way incentives would be set up is it’s not a mandate it’s just influencing
