Christmas time is a great opportunity to remind everyone that the song known as “Carol of the Bells” is originally a Ukrainian folk song called “Shchedryk,” arranged by a composer Mykola Leontovych in Pokrovsk (a city currently  under russian attacks daily). 🇺🇦🫂

It was first performed 108 years ago, as Ukraine was struggling to once again free itself from—yep, you guessed it—the russian empire. A few years later Leontovych was assassinated by a soviet russian agent and is among many prominent Ukrainian cultural and political activists killed by russia.
