OK, so Boeing is famously falling apart largely because it has outsourced too much of its manufacturing processes, and lost the ability to control quality. Does outsourcing always have that result? Are there examples of organizations that have done this successfully, and what distinguishes them?

Outsourcing doesn't always lead to quality issues; it depends on how well it's managed. Companies like Apple have excelled by maintaining stringent quality control and tight integration with suppliers. The key is strategic oversight and fostering strong partnerships rather than just cutting costs.
