OK, so Boeing is famously falling apart largely because it has outsourced too much of its manufacturing processes, and lost the ability to control quality. Does outsourcing always have that result? Are there examples of organizations that have done this successfully, and what distinguishes them?

I noticed more cabinets are being made with material that is outsourced. Not necessarily of the critical life infrastructure or connectivity standpoint, but I find it fascinating. I can’t say that I know of an outsourcing unit that isn’t Apple (or Samsung et al) that hasn’t been a catastrophe. That said, Apple and Samsung have both had their blunders. Note 7 blowing up on airplanes, Apple telling us we were holding our phones wrong with the iPhone 4 antennagate. I suppose it’s going to be a big ask to find a company that has not had a mess as a result of outsourcing.
